Bennie & Shirley Smith add $20,000 to scholarship endowment

Bennie and Shirley Smith paid University President Wilma Mishoe a visit April 29 to drop off a $20,000 donation to go toward scholarships at the University.

The co-owners of Bennie Smith Funeral Homes raised $19,000 for Delaware State University from their annual Holiday Celebration and Scholarship Benefit Dec. 29 in the Rollins Ballrooms of the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino. The Smiths added an additional $1,000 to round off their donation to $20,000, which has been added to the Bennie and Shirley Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund the couple established at the University in 2017.

More than 1,000 people attended the celebration/benefit. Among the attendees were clergy and members of the education, business and faith-based communities, as well as a host of the clients and friends served over the years by the 14 sites of Bennie Smith Funeral Homes located throughout the Delmarva Peninsula. In addition to benefiting Delaware State University, proceeds from the event also raised scholarship dollars for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
