Hampton University hosts National HBCU Media Week, HBCU award
HBCU media and fundraising professionals converged on the Hampton University campus for the AARP National HBCU Media Week and the HBCU Awards July 9-11. The Summit is designed to engage the national HBCU community in media literacy and development and provided best practices in media culture building for HBCU communities from around the nation.
Presenters at the conference discussed correcting misinformation in the media about HBCUs, HBCUs journalism schools preparing communications professionals and winning fundraising practices.
"HBCU Media week presented a great opportunity to discuss and evaluate media coverage of HBCUs," said HU President Dr. William R. Harvey.
The HBCU Awards were held at the Hampton University Student Center on July 10.  HU, the reigning 2014 HBCU of the year, won two top awards. Those honors went to Hampton University's Minority Men's Health Initiative for Best Research Center and to HU Basketball Coach Ed Joyner who was named Best Male Coach of the Year.  The HBCU Awards, created by HBCU Digest Founding Editor Jarrett L. Carter, Sr., in 2011, are the first national awards established to recognize the influence and impact of HBCUs on American culture crowning winners in the fields of leadership, arts, athletics, research, and community engagement.
"It is important for us to tell the world about the critical role HBCUs play in higher education," said Harvey." We were honored to partner with HBCU Digest to host the awards and recognize HBCU accomplishments."
