ASU Students Advance in Global Business "Family-Case" Competition

  • Advance to international round-two to compete against peers from Germany, Canada & Columbia.
  • First-time ASU has been chosen to participate in this established international college competition.
  • Event sponsored by the University of Vermont's Grossman School of Business.
Four of Alabama State University's students have now advanced globally in one of the world's most prestigious college of business competitions, in which four-year institutions from across the globe vie for the accolades as among the world's most savvy business students.
The Schlesinger Global Family Enterprise Case Competition that is sponsored by the University of Vermont's Grossman School of Business has chosen ASU's student team to advance to round-two of a three-round event. A total of 46 teams representing 29 nations entered the competition. ASU's students emerged as one of the 27 teams to move on to the next level.
ASU's student team members from the Dr. Percy J. Vaughn, Jr. College of Business Administration (COBA) are Kimberly Thomas, Lezoghia Member-Meneh, Maryam Muhammad and Urska Velec. Each will represent ASU with coaching from their COBA faculty advisers, Dr. Sara Bliss Kiser, professor of Business Management, and Dr. Mario Zaino, associate professor of Marketing.
FIRST-EVER VIRTUAL COMPETITION FOR UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT'S SCHLESINGER AWARDS
ASU's team will compete next on January 11. The competition was held virtually for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, said Kiser.
"I am so proud at how well each of ASU's four business college students did in round-one of the competition. They presented a comprehensive business plan about a fictitious 'model family case' business merger acquisition between two established businesses from different cultures and regions across the globe. ASU did it so well as to successfully advance to round-two of the competition," said Kiser.
Kiser said in the second round, ASU students will compete against teams from Canada's University of Toronto, Germany's EBS University and Columbia's University of the Andes.
    ABOUT THE COMPETITION
The annual Schlesinger Global Family Enterprise Case Competition prepares participants to understand the critical issues that are unique to family enterprise by applying the knowledge and expertise they have developed in the classroom towards solving complex family business cases. During four tough rounds of competition, teams present their cases to a distinguished panel of judges who determine which group best understood, analyzed and presented the case.
ASU STUDENT TEAM MEMBER SAYS "READY FOR VICTORY"
One of the ASU student team members, Kimberly Thomas, a Montgomery native who is a senior in Marketing, said ASU's team plans to be tough competitors in round-two.
"I feel great about our chances to win in round-two and advance to the finals because we have been meeting non-stop both virtually and in-person for the 30 days before our first round and that has allowed us to better brainstorm and construct positive business outcomes for the case we were presented. We will follow that same model into our next round. Our hard work paid off before and I am confident it will again," Thomas said.
Kiser said regardless of what transpires in the future, the Hornet Nation family was well represented by its four COBA students.
"We have a great and diverse team of students that made a win happen. It is a proud moment for ASU," stated Kiser.
