Edward Waters College News November 4, 2013 Female Faculty Trained for STEM Dr. Anita Mandal has been teaching Biology classes at Edward Waters College for eight years, but she is now the one learning new leadership and development training. Dr. Mandal and Psychology professor Dr. Suzan Armstrong-West are participating in the Preparing Critical Faculty for the Future grant. Edward Waters College was one of four historically black colleges and universities chosen by the Association of American Colleges and Universities to receive money from the National Science Foundation. "When I learned we were a recipient, I was jumping with joy," said Dr. Mandal. The program works to improve undergraduate education by engaging women of color faculty in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with intensive academic leadership and professional development. "I and Dr. Armstrong-West started working on the application in May with the help or our team. This grant will help us network which will improve our research. It will also help us recruit the best science students," said Dr. Mandal. By providing this training to faculty, the National Science Foundation hopes it will increase the number of minority STEM graduates from historically underrepresented populations. "It will help Edward Waters College produce better quality students to compete in this global society," said Dr. Mandal. Both women attended the fall conference Next Generation STEM Learning: Inquiry, Innovation, Inclusion and Evidence in San Diego, California. It is the first of many seminars and workshops they will attend through this grant. SANDRA M.
