Claflin University News April 17, 2012 Savannah River Remediation Donates $10,000 to Claflin During Corporate Breakfast Five of the 15 interns at Savannah River Remediation this summer will be Claflin students. It's a representation of a partnership that began three years ago and is continuing to thrive through STEM-related research, training, internships, fellowships and job placement for Claflin students. "Three years ago, I was introduced to Claflin University," said Dave Olson, Savannah River Remediation (SRR) president and project manager as he accepted a presidential citation recognizing those partnerships at the Corporate Community and Friends Breakfast in Augusta, Ga., on April13. "It is the best university I have come in contact with. It's not about size, it's about heart, passion and commitment. Those five interns are from a pool of 500 applicants. They are rivaling the best and biggest institutions in science and technology." The breakfast is held annually during the Claflin University International Alumni Association Convention for current and potential business partners. Olson also presented a check from SRR to Claflin for $10,000 to support scholarships in support of the University's $96.4 million capital campaign. During the breakfast, President Henry N. Tisdale told the Augusta area business community that Claflin University is moving to new levels and differentiating itself, making it the stand among the best universities in the world. He noted advancements such as significant changes in enrollment, enhanced facilities, cutting-edge technology and national recognition. The capital campaign will help to further distinguish Claflin as one of the best teaching and research universities in the world, he said. "We are committed to making a strong university stronger," Dr. Tisdale said. "Imagine the possibilities ... Claflin sitting among the best universities in the world; retaining students, rewarding faculty, telling great stories of great researchers solving critical problems, developing alternative fuels, being a hub for forensics science.
