Winston-Salem State University News July 19, 2012 WSSU Social Work Program Earns Initial Accreditation The Council on Social Work Education's Commission on Accreditation officially granted an initial four-year accreditation to the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree program offered in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Work at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) at its recent meeting in June. "This initial accreditation makes our program competitive with our peer institutions and it allows our students to obtain a master's degree in social work in one year as well as the ability to sit for licensure in any state," said Dr. Isiah Marshall, Jr., program coordinator for the BSW program. "We are so thankful for the support from faculty, administrative staff, students, advisory board, field instructors and community based organizations. They are the ones who made this awesome task possible." The initial accreditation process took over four years and included a self-study component and an onsite visit by accreditation team members. Full time faculty in the program include Marshall, Dr. Yolanda Byrd, Dr. Janella Melius, Dr. Sonja Harry and Dr. Tiffany Baffour. The Bachelor of Social Work program began in 2009 and grew out of the sociology and social welfare program which had been at WSSU since the 1970s. Graduates of the BSW program have gone on to graduate schools in social work at the University of South Carolina, Clark-Atlanta University, Washington University-St. Louis, the University of Central Florida, N.C. State University, N.C. Central University and UNC Charlotte as well as the School of Law at Wake Forest University. Additionally, many program graduates are currently in employed as social workers in various agencies throughout the State of North Carolina. SANDRA M.
