Harris-Stowe University News February 19, 2014 Harris-Stowe State University to Celebrate TRIO Day 2014 Harris-Stowe State University Office of Sponsored Programs along with approximately 300 TRIO students and their parents from across the St. Louis region will converge at Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine, Allied Health Building for National TRIO Day, Saturday, February 22, 2014. TRIO, a federal program, includes eight initiatives targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students and persons with disabilities in matriculating through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate. TRIO programs, including Upward Bound, Student Support Services and the McNair Scholars are U.S. Department of Education funded and designed to support disadvantaged students at host institutions. TRIO Day encourages students to give back through workshops, community service and academic-focused activities. This year, students will participate in workshops focused on "Getting Plugged In." Topics will emphasize goal setting; emotional health; teen stress and violence prevention; money management; and careers in STEM, to name a few. Additionally, parents, through special sessions, will have the opportunity to learn about trauma in youth; accessing academic and disability accommodations; and parenting first-generation college students. Highlights for the day include guest speaker James Clark, vice president of Community Outreach for Better Family Life. Gentlemen of Vision, national step champions, will provide further encouragement to "get plugged in" by highlighting their vision of success and peer mentorship. Along with HSSU and SLU, TRIO programs from Jefferson Community College, Ranken Technical College, St. Louis Community College and Higher Education Consortium's Educational Opportunity Programs will participate in the day-long celebration.
