Sara begins tenure as Tuskegee University provost

Dr. Tejinder S. Sara, a Tuskegee University faculty member and administrator for more than 43 years, has been appointed by the university's leadership as its provost.

As provost, Sara is the university's chief academic officer and represents the university when the president is unavailable. The provost oversees all academic colleges and schools, graduate studies and research, the library, distance education, research and sponsored programs, the university registrar and the chapel. He reports to the president and serves as a member of the president's Executive Council.
After joining the faculty of what is now the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science in 1973, he served as the college's associate dean from 1989 to 1999, and as its dean from 2007 until he retired in 2016. His teaching and research focus has included strategic management, international business, finance, economics and economic development.

"Dr. Sara's keen academic, strategic and business insights will be a tremendous asset to the Office of the Provost and the university's leadership team as a whole," said Interim President Charlotte P. Morris. "He is beloved and well-respected by his colleagues, students and alumni alike, and I very much appreciate his return from retirement to lead the academic aspects of the university."

After graduating from California State University with a bachelor's degree in business and economics, Sara worked with Mattel Inc. in its inventory management division. He joined the Tuskegee faculty while completing his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Massachusetts. During his tenure on the Tuskegee faculty, Sara's collaborations with corporations, foundations and government agencies garnered more than $7.7 million in research funding and 20-plus publications in various academic and industry journals.

Along with Sara's appointment, the university has appointed two vice provosts to assist Sara and Dr. Tamara Floyd-Smith, who continues in her role as assistant provost. Dr. Ruby Perry, in addition to her role as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, will serve concurrently as the university's vice provost for undergraduate education. Dr. Walter Hill, dean of the College of Agriculture, Environment and Nutrition Sciences, will serve concurrently as the university's vice provost for academic affairs, as well as land-grant, community engagement, integrative and sustainability affairs.
