Savannah State receives extended federal grant
Funds to help selected first-generation students
Savannah State University (SSU) has received a continuation grant for its Student Support Services (SSS) program from the US Department of Education (DOE). The amount granted for the 2015-2016 year is $292,340. The award letter notes the grant is expected to be for five years. The funds will total $1.5 million.
SSS is a federally-funded TRIO program that provides assistance for students from various backgrounds. Each academic year, SSS identifies, selects and serves 175 low-income, first-generation and disabled college students who have academic support need. SSU has been providing these grant-funded services for 24 years.
This population includes homeless students and students aging out of foster care. It provides participants with the support necessary to persist successfully in a program of study leading to a baccalaureate degree and enrollment in a graduate or professional school.
Program services include academic tutoring, group and individual counseling, financial and economic literacy education, supplemental English instruction, academic advisement, cultural enrichment, career planning, graduate school and professional exploration, peer mentoring, temporary housing assistance, Early Alert System administration, and more.
