North Carolina Central University News October 2017 NCCU Celebrates Founders Day, Induction of Golden Eagles North Carolina Central University<http://www.nccu.edu/index.cfm> (NCCU) will highlight its Homecoming celebrations on Friday, Oct. 27, with a Founder's Day Convocation that pays tribute to its founder, Dr. James E. Shepard, and formally welcomes members of the class of 1967 into the Society of Golden Eagles. The Society of Golden Eagles is open to alumni who are celebrating 50 or more years as graduates of NCCU. The Class of 1938 was the first reunion class to be inducted into this distinguished group. Members of the Society of golden Eagles are among NCCU's most dedicated supporters and play a significant role in the university's legacy, said NCCU Chancellor, Dr. Johnson O. Akinleye. "I applaud and congratulate these Eagles who have fully exemplified the university's motto of Truth and Service," Akinleye said. "These newest members of the society of Golden Eagles continue to model the values that were instilled in them a half century ago. They continue to serve as great ambassadors for this great institution. North Carolina Central University salutes the Class of 1967." The Founder's Day address will be delivered by Class of 1967 member Isaiah Tidwell, retired executive vice president for Wachovia Bank and a member of the NCCU Board of Trustees. A native of Charlotte, Tidwell received a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1967 from North Carolina Central University and a master's degree in business administration in 1980 from Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University. He is a life member of North Carolina Central University Alumni Association, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and is a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity. He has served on many boards, including Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and others. He is currently on the corporate boards of Snyder's Lance Inc. and Lincoln National Corp. "North Carolina Central University has a number of new and exciting alumni events planned for Homecoming," said LaMisa McCoy Foxx, interim assistant vice chancellor of Alumni Relations. "The induction of the Class of 1967 into the Society of Golden Eagles is indeed a focal point of the week-long celebration." Immediately following Convocation, university officials, students and alumni will process to the Dr. James E. Shepard statue across from the university entrance on Fayetteville Street. Akinleye will formally lay a wreath in memory of Shepard, whose will and determination led to the formation in 1910 of the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua, now known as North Carolina Central University. Initially funded through his tireless efforts in attracting philanthropy and investments in the school, the university was taken under the wings of the state by the N.C. General Assembly in 1925, where it remains as a member of the University of North Carolina system of higher education.
