Dean of Library Services
Division of Academic Affairs

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, one of thirteen institutions in the University System of Maryland, invites applications for the position of Dean of Library Services.  The Dean serves as academic and administrative leader of the Frederick Douglas Library. This key leadership position is central to the University's strategic plan and mission. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Serves as chief library administrative officer and provides visionary and innovative leadership in implementing the mission and goals of the Frederick Douglass Library;
  • Articulates a clear vision  for the role of an academic library in the 21st century;
  • Administers and manages budget allocations and serves as advocate for the library, library faculty, professional and support staff;
  • Coordinates the planning, developing, and evaluation of  programs;
  • Seeks, develops and administers external funding sources to support the expansion of library services and programming;
  • Effectively collaborates and communicates with all internal and external campus constituents; directs, develops, implements, and evaluates all aspects of library services in order to meet the scholarly and intellectual needs of the University community and its service areas;
  • Fosters an organizational and educational climate that promotes and celebrates diversity within the University community;
  • Recruits and supervises the library personnel and provides for skill enhancements; participate in USM library's dean's and director's committees and coordinated services among the USM institutions;
  • Serves on and /or chair committees for professional associations at the state, regional, and national levels; and develop, monitor, and assess annual strategic operational plans and obtain financial resources from external sources.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Library or Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited or other nationally;accredited program required; additional advanced degree desired;
  • Professional record of scholarship and merit that meets the criteria for rank of Librarian IV/Full Professor desired;
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in library administration in an academic library with experience in strategic planning;
  • An established record of development and fundraising experience preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively serve as an advocate and spokesperson for the mission of the library required.
  • Strong interpersonal, excellent oral and written communication and management skills required with evidence of success in developing collaborative relationships within and beyond the university:
  • Evidence of expertise in identifying the needs of a culturally diverse student population and commitment to faculty/staff diversity.

Rank/Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
