WVSD Webcasting Connects People From Around the World
WVSD 91.7 FM, the "Radio Voice of the Valley," is not just a broadcasting radio station, but a webcasting station that provides listeners with inspirational, jazz, rhythm and blues music, public affairs programs and updates on athletic competitions within the university's service area.
This 24-hour non-commercial educational radio station began broadcasting in the spring of 1991 and began webcasting in spring 2004 with the purpose of broadcasting MVSU baseball events. Since its inception, WVSD webcasting has allowed MVSU to reach and engage listeners from all around the world while providing quality audio broadcasts.
WVSD radio operates under the Department of Mass Communication with the goal of training students for careers in the broadcast industry. Enrolled students from the Mass Communication Department and volunteer students from other academic areas receive training on WVSD's state-of-the-art equipment. In addition, students receive additional training for on-air and technical skill presentations and have regular air-shifts.
"WVSD's webcast gives the university great exposure," said Wanda Young, radio station coordinator. "And it allows for the talent of our students to be recognized by potential employers from all over the world."
WVSD 91.7 FM also operates under the Office of Public Broadcasting/Media Productions in the University Advancement unit at MVSU. It is funded primarily through the U. S. Department of Education's Title III Program and state funds.
