Hugine's Contract Extended
Huntsville, Ala. ---- The Executive Committee of Alabama A&M University's Board of Trustees met August 23 at 12 noon in Birmingham, Ala., where members considered an extension of the contract of President Andrew Hugine, Jr. Hugine has served as the 11th president of the nearly 140-year-old institution since 2009.
Board President Pro Tem Odysseus Lanier called August 23 "a great day for the University." He noted that the Board has signaled its confidence in Hugine's vision through its decision to extend the administrator's contract through July 15, 2017.
Lanier added that an end has come to the presidential turnover that has rocked the institution through 2005. "We want to show our students, their parents, faculty and staff, the alumni, and the corporate community that we are moving this institution forward with stable and consistent leadership."
"I want to thank the Board of Trustees for their continued confidence in me," stated Dr. Hugine following the meeting. He extended thanks to First Lady Abbiegail Hugine, his administrative leadership team and the University family. He added feeling a sense of pride for "the tremendous progress and accomplishments of the past three years."
While Hugine acknowledged that much still had to be done, he noted: "We have successfully addressed SACS probation and maintained full accreditation for the University, strengthened the academic division through the creation of colleges and the addition of new degree programs, and strengthened the university financially. With this contract extension, we can now better plan our strategies for future growth and development, as well as refocus and intensify our work of addressing the challenges of financial resources, capital improvement, and advocacy facing the university."
