POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

JOB Title: Graduate and Student Assistant (part-time)
Graduate Student positions ($10.50 per hour)
Undergraduate Student position ($8.00 per hour)

The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library is seeking highly motivated, energetic graduate and undergraduate students for employment opportunities.  Students must be available to work 20 hours per week during library hours of operation.

ARCHIVES DEPARTMENT
Requirements and Duties:

  • Enrolled as a graduate student at one of the Atlanta University Center school member institutions

  • Successfully completed course work in African American history and culture

  • Experience working in library desirable

  • Some heavy lifting required

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Attention to detail required

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Assist with research services

  • Retrieve and re-shelve book and manuscript materials

  • Prepare photocopies for researchers, processing, and preservation

  • Assist with acquisitions, processing, and cataloging collections including bibliographic searching, packing, sorting, filing, labeling, and preparing inventories

  • Assist with preservation measures to care for collections

  • Assist with exhibit preparation and public programming
    DIGITAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
    Requirements and Duties

  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student at one of the Atlanta University Center member institutions

  •               Sensitivity to and experience handling library or archival materials.
    
  •               Ability to operate a computer and scanner
    
  •               Ability to use Adobe Photoshop preferred.
    
  •               Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database software applications preferred.
    
  •               Attention to detail required
    
  •               Strong customer service skills
    
  •               Carefully handle fragile and/or rare archival materials
    
  •               Preparation of materials for scanning which may include creating an inventory, dis-binding materials and packing
    
  •               Calibrate all components of scanners and computer workstations as needed
    
  •               Scan a variety of formats including documents, photographs, artwork, etc.
    
  •               Importing images into editing software; manipulate images as required
    
  •               Record technical and descriptive metadata
    
  •               Upload files and associated metadata into content management system for online access
    

DISCOVERY AND ACCESS SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Requirements and Duties:

  • Enrolled as a graduate student at one of the Atlanta University Center member institutions

  • Experience working in library  desirable

  • Basic knowledge of the LC classification system

  • Basic knowledge of general databases and print resources available in the Woodruff library

  • Basic to intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Attention to detail required

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  •    Experience with iMACs and software desirable Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
    
  •    Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
    
  •    Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    
  •    Sound judgment to identify and report problems to supervisors and contribute to resolving them.
