Tuskegee to host social work conference, Savannah State’s president to speak

The 43rd Annual Alabama / Mississippi Social Work Education Conference will be held Oct. 8-10 on campus. This year’s event will be held at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center at Tuskegee University and is sponsored by the Department of Social Work.

Themed, “Keeping Creativity in Motion,” social work faculty, students and social work practitioners from Alabama and Mississippi will gather for three days of education sessions and activities. Also, graduate school recruiters from University of Alabama, Georgia State University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Southern Mississippi, and Union University will visit to speak with students about their programs.

The plenary speaker for this event is Dr. Cheryl Davenport Dozier, president of Savannah State University. Dozier will address the conference on Oct. 9.
Since becoming the school’s 13th president in 2011, Dozier has advanced the university’s mission of developing productive members of a global society through high quality instruction, scholarship, research, service and community involvement. Under Dozier’s leadership, enrollment at the institution has reached an all-time high, fundraising has increased and several new alumni chapters have been chartered. She also has worked to expand the university’s global engagement, foster community partnerships and improve customer service.

Dozier joined the Savannah State administration after a 17-year career at the University of Georgia. During her tenure at UGA, she served on the president’s cabinet as associate provost and chief diversity officer; was a professor in the School of Social Work; and served as assistant vice president for Academic Affairs at the Gwinnett University Center.

Dozier also was one of 21 citizens appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on the Georgia Child Welfare Reform Council, which was created to improve the state’s child welfare system. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a master’s in social work from Atlanta University (now Clark-Atlanta University) and a doctorate in social work from Hunter College at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
