Dr. Jonathan Stiles will host ASM International Fellow for Africa

In an effort to encourage research and training partnerships with international scientists early in their career, Jonathan Stiles, Ph.D., professor in the department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Immunology, will host Felix Botchway, a Ph.D. student at the University of Ghana Medical School, Accra through the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) International Fellowship for Africa award.  Botchway, under the direction of Dr. Stiles, will pursue the research project, “Role of CXCL10 in fatal cerebral malaria pathogenesis.”

The ASM International Fellowship Program for Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean encourages research and training collaborations in the microbiological sciences to promising young investigators in resource limited nations who are:
·      within five years of obtaining, or are in the process of obtaining, their Masters, Ph.D., or other equivalent academic degree, and
·      who are working in any of the microbiology disciplines.
·
Fellows visit a host scientist abroad and conduct a research project in microbiology. The fellowships can be between six weeks to six months in length and is not intended to provide travel to obtain a degree at the host institution.

Dr. Stiles has over 20 years of experience utilizing genomic approaches in studying murine models of various host-parasite interactions including malaria, leishmaniasis, and trypanosomiasis in Africa. He has established collaborative research and training programs with the Noguchi Memorial Medical Research Institute at the University of Ghana Medical School. Dr. Stiles is the director of the Research Integrity course offered to the Graduate Biomedical Science Ph.D. program at Morehouse School of Medicine. He also participates in international research training sponsored by the Fogarty International Center’s Minority International Health Disparities Research Training Program (FIC/MHIRT) annually.
