HOWARD UNIVERSITY'S EIGHTH CLASS OF FRESHMAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY STUDENTS TO TRAVEL TO CHINA

Howard University's Freshman Leadership Academy program consists of bi-weekly workshops, case studies and group projects, mentorship from upperclassmen, community service, leadership retreats, and an annual Global Leadership Experience abroad.

Sixty members of the eighth class of Howard University's Freshman Leadership Academy (FLA) will embark on a global awareness trip - seeking to learn, serve and lead in Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai in China, from July 23 - August 5, 2018.

The FLA is implementing a call for action to organizations, corporations, foundations, and others that align with their mission and motto to support their fundraising efforts.

With an acceptance rate of 12 percent, the FLA is one of the most sought-after initiatives on Howard University's campus. In the Fall 2017 semester, more than 500 students, roughly 25 percent of the freshman class, applied to join the highly acclaimed organization, of which 61 students were accepted. The program consists of bi-weekly workshops, case studies and group projects, mentorship from upperclassmen, community service, leadership retreats, and an annual Global Leadership Experience abroad. One of FLA's pillars is to encourage students to pursue international opportunities such as fellowships, scholarships and internships.

In addition to the leadership and professional development opportunities, the students finished the Fall 2017 semester with a 3.47 average GPA and 87 percent of the students received a 3.0 GPA or higher. The FLA engaged in six group service projects and held an average of 30 community service hours per member. FLA members are highly involved students, as demonstrated by the following statistics:

  • 70 percent are involved in three or more campus activities, teams, or organizations
  • 37 percent are in respective schools/colleges honors programs
  • 15 percent have Spring 2018 internships
  • 25 percent have secured summer internships while the others are pending application results

FLA is committed to action through its Global Leadership Experience, where first-year students are exposed to international economic and business policies, and are given an opportunity to study language and culture, as well as expanding their knowledge and perception of global leadership. Through this international experience, students also get a chance to engage with government officials, business and community leaders, healthcare and academic officials, and more. The experience is comprehensive, with learning opportunities for each FLA member and their varied academic and professional interests.
