Subject: [NMRT-L] FW: 50 Spectrum Scholars available -- apply by March 8
FYI, Please distribute widely!
The American Library Association’s Office for Diversity will award
over fifty scholarships in June 2011. We are currently accepting
applications for the $6,500 scholarship package, which includes a
$5,000 one-time cash award and attendance at the Spectrum Leadership
Institute following the first year of LIS study. Together we can
ensure that every eligible individual is aware of this scholarship
opportunity and able to apply prior to our March 8, 2011 deadline.
Thank you for disseminating Spectrum program information to every
continuing (provided they have completed 12 or less credit hours) or
prospective student who has applied to your program. Please share the
information provided with everyone who has inquired about your
program, not only admitted students. Information about the Spectrum
Scholarship may also prove useful to support staff working in your
department, your institution’s library, or campus and community wide.
More information on the Spectrum Scholarship application can be found
on the ALA website at www.ala.org/spectrumhttp://www.ala.org/spectrum. An email blast is included
at the bottom of this message for your convenience.
Established in 1997, by ALA members, the Spectrum Scholarship Program
has become one of the most important drivers of diversity in the
library profession. The program strives to recruit and award
scholarships to students from five under-represented groups: American
Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino
or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander for graduate programs in
library and information studies. To date over 680 masters level
Spectrum Scholarships have been awarded. Former Spectrum scholars now
serve on ALA Council and numerous professional committees; head
branches and departments of public and academic libraries; work in and
manage law, medical, and special libraries; lead efforts to explore
and integrate new technologies; and find numerous ways to give back to
the profession.
Thank you for your efforts to support more talented students within
the library and information science profession than ever before.
Prospective applicants or questions can be sent to Gwendolyn
Prellwitz, ALA Office for Diversity, at (800)545-2433 ext. 5048,
