Lois B. Hollis Center for Social Equity Invites Campus Community and General Public to Campus Community Partnership Outreach Interest Meeting

Albany State University's (ASU) Lois B. Hollis Center for Social Equity invites the campus community and general public to participate in a Campus-Community Partnership Outreach Interest Meeting for the 2018 Community Conversations Research Application proposal. The meeting will be Wednesday, March 21, 2018, in the Arthur K. Williams MicroBusiness Enterprise Center, 1st Floor Conference Room, located at 230 S Jackson Street Albany, GA, 31701.
Participants can choose to attend one of the following sessions:

  •    8:30 a.m.- 10:30 a.m.
    
  •    11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
    
  •    2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
    
  •    5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.

The Center has been in the process of recharging the 2014 AMPP Up The Good Life Initiative to prepare for addressing the milestone marking 400 Years of African American History from 1619-2019. The Center will continue its goal of creating an asset-based, community and economic development model with a sharpened focus on developing sustainable efforts for tackling the social challenges that will be present beyond the 2019 commemoration.

"Given our community's historical and contemporary setting, we are a "critical" or "perfect" case to help create a model that can assist the nation in resolving this pressing need", Dr. Adams-Cooper, director of the center.
Based on the 400 Years of African-American History Commission Acthttps://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/1242, the Center seeks campus and community partners to host a community conversation to help identify and assess our community's civic assets and capacity for creating the model.

The Center is submitting a 2018 Community Conversations Research Application Proposal to the Corporation for National & Community Service. The grant is to conduct participatory research where both the campus and community come together during community conversation events to examine our collective civic engagement efforts and combined ability to identify and address local issues. That type of information will help the Center's efforts of community building.
Therefore, the Center is inviting the campus (i.e., students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni) and community groups (i.e., government, nonprofit, business, education, and religious organizations) to attend the interest meeting and learn about becoming a partner with us to host a community conversation event.
The National Issues Forums (NIF) civic engagement process that involves deliberative dialogue will be used as the format to conduct the community conversation events. Using the NIF model builds on the legacy of Dr. Billy C. Black, ASU's sixth president, who brought this civic engagement model to the campus and community in the 1980s. The Center is currently a member of the National Issues Forums network.
