Join the James B. Duke Memorial Library for the opening of RCLM37 II outdoor exhibit, Saturday, October 16, 2021, from 11:00AM-1:00PM. RCLM37 II features two outdoor pieces. The purpose of RCLM37 II is to continue the story about how urban renewal displaced Black families, educators, professionals, domestic workers, and businesses who lived and worked along the Beatties Ford Road Corridor.

[cid:f98621fd-0f0c-479b-9fda-98eac13b083e]

The project started three years ago to collect, document, and preserve the history of the Beatties Ford Road Corridor/Biddleville community. Biddleville was built around Biddle University, now Johnson C. Smith University, in 1867 and is the oldest post-bellum in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The significance of the exhibit title RCLM37 refers to the Beatties Ford Road exit 37 off of Interstate 85. In the 1960's, the creation of the Interstate-277 expressway loop and the presence of I-85 split the Beatties Ford Road Corridor/Biddleville community and wiped out several homes, schools, and businesses.

RCLM37 II focuses on Dr. George E. Davis and Dr. Henry Lawrence McCrorey because they not only lived in the Historic West End but were vocal advocates for the education of Black people. The program will open with African Dancing and Drumming with April Turner and welcome by Dr. Karen D. Morgan, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Mask is required for all attendees and social distancing. Bring your devices to listen to original soundtracks and oral history. Registration is limited. The program will start in the James B. Duke Memorial Library at Johnson C. Smith University,100 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC 28216.
