SUMMER ACADEMIC SUCCESS ACADEMY LAUNCHES 2011 SESSION
Noted Author, Columnist, Educator is Keynote Speaker - An energetic address by Dr. Adolph Brown, columnist, author, and award-winning educator, highlighted the program recently as Coppin State University's Summer Academic Success Academy (SASA) launched its 2011 session.

Nearly 250 students, staff, faculty and parents gathered in Coppin's new Physical Education Complex as SASA kicked-off its second year as an innovative, on-campus recruitment and retention initiative. Opening exercise participants also included Coppin's President Dr. Reginald S. Avery, Dr. Reginald Ross, Vice President of Enrollment Management at, Provost Dr. Cynthia Hammond, SASA Program Directors Dr. Lelia Washington and Professor Juanita Gilliam.

SASA's intensive six-week program is designed to help first time Coppin students improve academic skills, bridge the transition from high school to college, increase their placement test scores and to stay the course to graduate on time. "We are thrilled (by) the enthusiasm and motivation Dr. Brown generated with his dynamic and fun approach ... (imploring) ... students to make the best of this program and their entire college experience," said Dr. Washington. "It was the perfect launch to engage and inspire the students." A much sought-after speaker, Dr. Brown is also a popular media personality, psychologist, business consultant, coach and father of seven.

More than 200 students are enrolled in SASA's 2011 session of Math, Reading, English, Health and Science coursework, cultural enrichment and athletic programs, and social and intercultural exposure.

An orientation course will familiarize students to the college process, expectations and goals. They will have an opportunity to participate in a Talent Showcase and a theatrical production. "The potential to complete up to 10 college credits in the summer prior to their entry into the academic year will be a huge advantage for our SASA students." said Dr. Ross. The residential program is free to eligible 2011 high school graduates and is fully funded by Coppin.

The per-student cost to the University is $3,428. "SASA's focus on key developmental and enrichment areas while allowing students to have a true cohort experience is a great step towards our implementation of a fully functional First Year Experience program," said Dr. Ross. The teaching and administrative staff is comprised of faculty from Coppin, Morgan State University, Baltimore City Public Schools, Morehouse College, and Middle Tennessee State University. "Last year set the tone for us to expect even greater accomplishments this year," said Professor Gilliam. "We have some of the most talented faculty and staff who bring a broad range of skill to SASA, making this a remarkable experience for the students." More than 170 students completed the initial program in 2010.
