Mary E. Peoples Scholarship luncheon aims to raise $150K; national president of Delta Sigma Theta will keynote

Formerly known as the First Lady's Luncheon, Jackson State University will rename its annual fundraiser as the Mary E. Peoples Scholarship Luncheon in honor of the wife of Jackson State's sixth president, Dr. John A. Peoples Jr., who served in this role from 1967 until 1984. The event is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, in the Jackson Convention Complex, 105 E Pascagoula Street, Jackson, Mississippi, 39201.

"We are excited about hosting the Mary E. Peoples Scholarship Luncheon during the week of the President's Inauguration," said Gwen Caples, interim vice president for Institutional Advancement and External Affairs. "First lady emeritus Mary E. Peoples is a former educator who was dedicated to her students and always supported them. Her longtime service in the community as a former educator is highly commendable. Therefore, it is befitting that the luncheon bears her name as we continue to provide valuable scholarship opportunities for JSU students."

This year's goal is to raise $150,000 for high-achieving students with a financial need. Beverly E. Smith, national president and chief executive officer for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will keynote the luncheon.

Smith retired from the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) as the assistant commissioner and Georgia State director for Adult Education and GED Testing. In this role, she provided adult education training programs for an average of 69,000 Georgia citizens annually with a staff of more than 1,200 educators and support staff at 450 sites throughout the state.

A recipient of numerous honors and awards, Smith was named the 2020 Georgia Outstanding Individual by Georgia General Assembly and the LEAD360 business organization's Executive of the Year for 2020-21.

Individual tickets are $150 each and $1,500 for a table of eight.
