Supporters Keep Legacy Alive

One of the first students to attend Norfolk State University when it became part of Virginia State College in 1944, continues to live on in the hearts and minds of the NSU community.

Recently, the Hampton Roads Shipping Association, International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the family of the late Edward L. Brown Sr. presented a check to the University in the amount of $500,000 to fully fund the Edward L. Brown Sr. Professorship in Management in the School of Business. The check symbolically represented the completion of a commitment first made to NSU almost 10 years ago.

"This major gift is a significant investment in NSU's future and in program development, and it also provides national distinction for the School of Business," said President Tony Atwater.

"I am gratified that Mr. Brown's vision of creating a legacy of achievement has come to fruition. Many personally knew this incredible man. Now, the funding of the professorship and gift will help keep his memory and legacy alive."

This donation represented one of the first half-million commitments ever made to NSU. In 2002, the ILA-Hampton Roads District Council and the Hampton Roads Shipping Association partnered to establish the Edward L. Brown Sr. Endowed Professorship in Management at NSU with the first payment of $58,000. Today, the endowment will help support the academic and scholarly activities of a professor of management in the NSU School of Business. Last year, Steven D. Papamarcos, Ph.D., was named the first Edward L. Brown Sr. Professor of Management and dean of the School of Business.

Born in Norfolk, Va., Brown was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. He later served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Merchant Marines. Following his military career, he joined the ILA Local 1248 and progressed through its leadership ranks. In 1968, he became the ILA president and served in that capacity until 1985. At the time of his death in 2010, Brown was international vice president and general vice president of the Atlantic Coast District.

Brown served on the NSU Foundation Board of Directors, 1976-2010; the Board of Visitors, 1994-1998; and the Athletics Foundation. NSU awarded him an honorary doctoral degree and he received an honorary doctor of law degree from Richmond Virginia Seminary.
