Shaw University Names Evelyn Leathers Vice President for Institutional Advancement
Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy, president of Shaw University, announced Evelyn Leathers as the University's new Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Leathers is the former Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Wiley College in Marshall, TX.
As vice president for Institutional Advancement, Leathers will provide executive-level operational management and supervision of alumni relations, annual giving, major gifts, corporate relations, foundation relations, public relations, stewardship and the University radio station. In addition, Leathers will advance the University's mission, strategic goals, priorities and objectives through substantial fundraising.
"We're excited to have Ms. Leathers join our executive team and provide the leadership we need to advance the University's fundraising goals," said Dr. Yancy. "Her knowledge and depth of experience in donor giving and relations will be a tremendous asset to the University. I am confident that Institutional Advancement will flourish under her direction."
Leathers brings more than 17 years of diverse higher education experience, including serving as a development officer and assistant dean. As the Director of Foundation Relations and Private Grants at Johnson C. Smith University, she helped to secure a $5.7 million donation from the Duke Endowment, the largest gift in the university's history. She also served as a key member of the university's fundraising team that successfully surpassed its $75 million "Pathways to Success" campaign goal. Leathers was also responsible for increasing alumni giving and participation from 18 percent to 25 percent over a three to five year period.
Leathers has served on several boards, including the Lupus Foundation, the Marshall Convention & Visitor's Bureau and the Best Friends Foundation Parent Advisory board. She is also a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, has volunteered with several organizations including the Goodwill Industries of Central Carolinas and has served as co-chair of the Maya Angelou Women Who Lead committee luncheon.
Leathers received both her bachelor's degree in Political Science and her master's degree in Adult Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. She also pursued doctoral studies in Higher Education Administration at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
