SSU, city to host BizCamp for youth at Moses Jackson center

Savannah State University (SSU), in partnership with the city of Savannah, will host its second BizCamp from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Aug. 6-10, for middle- and high-school youth attending the Moses Jackson Advancement Center (MJAC) summer program.

BizCamp will use an innovative curriculum created by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) to teach students how to turn their great ideas into successful businesses. The young entrepreneurs will present their completed business plans at 1 p.m., Aug. 10, before a panel of judges representing the fields of business, government and education. The student with the best business plan will receive a cash prize that can be used to start their business. The community is invited to attend BizCamp presentation day.

NFTE is considered the premier youth entrepreneurial education program in the country and has been featured by numerous media outlets, including the "Wall Street Journal," "New York Times" and CNN. Paul Smith, a certified NFTE Instructor and business professor at Newberry College in South Carolina, will lead the BizCamp workshops. Smith was the 2009 recipient of the YESCarolina Entrepreneurial Teacher of the Year Award.

The BizCamp project is funded by a grant to Savannah State from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide entrepreneurial training to youth and adults in Savannah's west-side neighborhoods. The MJAC, located at 1410-B Richards St., is a city of Savannah facility that opened in September 2010 to provide services that support the academic and economic advancement of families. SSU is of one of many community partners providing services at MJAC.

Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The university's 4,500 students select majors from 25 undergraduate and five graduate programs in the School of Teacher Education and three colleges: Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology.
