Howard University Receives 10 Nominations In HBCU Digest's 2018 HBCU Awards

Howard University has proudly secured 10 nominations in HBCU Digest's 2018 HBCU Awardshttps://hbcudigest.com/north-carolina-hbcus-dominate-2018-hbcu-awards-finalist-ballot/, tied for the lead with North Carolina A&T State University and Tennessee State University. Nominations include the prestigious 94-year-old student newspaper, The Hilltop, for Best Student Newspaper, the Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease, for Best Research Center and actor and alumnus Chadwick Boseman for Male Alumnus of the Year.

"Howard University academic divisions and student organizations had a year with several achievements," says HBCU Digest Founding Editor Jarrett Carter. "It is easy to see why the selection committee annually considers the university as a mainstay in this awards program, and why Howard remains as a model institution for American higher education, historically black or otherwise."

Best SGA- Howard University Student Government Association
Best Student Organization- WHBCU 96.3 student radio
Best Student Newspaper- The Hilltop
Best Research Center- Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease
Best Fine Arts Program- Howard University Gallery of Art
Best STEM Program- Howard University College of Engineering and Architecture
Male Alumnus of the Year- Chadwick Boseman
Female Faculty Member of the Year- Bahiyyah Muhammad, Ph.D., founding director of Howard's Inside-Out program and assistant professor, Department of Sociology and Criminology
Male Faculty Member of the Year- Greg Carr, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Afro-American Studies and associate professor of Africana Studies
Board of Trustees of the Year- Howard University

"Recognition through the HBCU Awards means that the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, staff and trustees is being noticed nationally," says President Wayne A. I. Frederick. "We are humbled to be nominated among such a distinguished list of honorees."

The HBCU Awards is the first and only national awards ceremony, recognizing influence and impact, honoring individual and institutional achievement at historically black colleges and universities throughout the United States. With more than 700 nominations received for this year's nomination process, an event record, winners will be selected from the fields of leadership, arts, athletics, research, and community engagement. Winners are selected by a panel of previous winners, journalists, HBCU executives, students and alumni for the merit of accomplishment and for generating positive coverage for HBCU campus communities.
