Hampton University News February 4, 2014 HU Dean Eric Sheppard named 2014 AIAA Associate Fellow The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has elected Dr. Eric Sheppard, dean of the Hampton University School of Engineering and Technology, to the grade of Associate Fellow. Sheppard was awarded on the basis of his notable contributions to the fields of art, science, and/or technology of aeronautics or astronautics. The AIAA Associate Fellow Dinner was held on Jan. 13 at the Gaylord(tm) Hotel and Convention Center, National Harbor, Md. in conjunction with the AIAA SciTech Forum. In 1963 the AIAA was formed with the merging of the American Rocket Society and the Institute of Aerospace Science. For more than 80 years, the AIAA has been an integral organization for the society of the aerospace engineer and scientist. It serves as the voice between professionals and aspiring professionals in the science community. The institute is looked at as an information resource for professional accomplishments. Sheppard's areas of interest include propulsion and power (particularly electromagnetic thrusters), design, analytical and computational methods in fluid and aero-dynamics, and reacting flows, as well as undergraduate engineering education, and the pathway to graduate education. Prior to starting his career with Hampton University, he served as the department head at Tuskegee University in the Aerospace Science Engineering Department. Sheppard also worked as a program officer at the National Science Foundation. At NSF, he worked with the Division of Undergraduate Education and later managed the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Sheppard received a bachelor's degree from Boston University and master's and doctorate (Sc.D.) degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His professional affiliations include: senior member and past member of the Academic Affairs Committee of the AIAA, member and past chair of the Aerospace Division and past chair of the Minorities in Engineering Award Committee for the ASEE, and membership in Sigma Xi, and Sigma Gamma Tau (the national aerospace engineering honor society).
