Hampton University's Harvey Library Awarded Grants from IMLS and NEH

Hampton University's William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library has been awarded a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.  The award in the amount of $99,980 is part of the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program.  Hampton University will host a national forum to discuss recruitment and retention of minority library professionals in the Library and Information Science field. The forum will convene 30-40 librarians who are leaders and experts in library science, diversity, and leadership to address the continued issues of recruitment of minorities to the field. Through the forum and additional virtual meetings, participants will generate strategies for addressing issues in minority librarianship, including improving outreach efforts of libraries to recruit a more diverse workforce and improving the experiences of minorities currently in the field. The forum will convene in the summer of 2018.  Tina D. Rollins, Library Director, will serve as principle investigator for the grant and Raeshawn McGuffie, Assistant Director of Technical Services, will serve as co-principle investigator.

The Harvey Library was also recently awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the amount of  $39,955.00 to pursue a project entitled: Wade in the Water: Preservation Environment Plan for the Peabody Collection at the Harvey Library at Hampton University.  The grant will serve to assess storage facilities and develop a long-term plan to preserve the Peabody Collection of Harvey Library.  The grant is under the NEH's Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections, Preservation and Access grant program.  The original project director of this award was Valinda Carroll, who now works for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.  Tina Rollins will now serve as principle investigator on this grant.

Tina D. Rollins, Harvey Library Director states that "The Harvey Library is ecstatic to be awarded these grants.  The NEH award will help to preserve the treasures of our special collections.  The IMLS grant will continue the work of past trailblazers in promoting diversity and inclusion of minorities in this field.  This national forum will not only discuss the issue, but create actionable solutions to recruitment and retention.  All libraries, regardless of their purpose must actively reflect their communities.  These awards will greatly help to support the mission and vision of the Harvey Library.
