Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well. Today I'm observing the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson decision that upheld the rights of states to pass laws allowing or even requiring racial segregation in public and private institutions such as schools, public transportation, restrooms, and restaurants. The case strengthened the ability of southern states to pass Jim Crow laws discriminating against African Americans and other minorities. "Separate but equal" remained the law of the land until the Supreme Court invalidated that case with the 1954 decision against segregation in Brown v. Board of Education.

Free Live Webinar: Rethink: Re-Imagining Libraries as Place - Part 2 - Wednesday, May 25, 2:00 ET

Description: Join us for the follow up discussion aimed at reconnecting our students and constituents to the magic of the physical library space. This webinar will kick off with a community discussion of best practices and include examples of reimagined spaces inside and outside of the HBCU Library Alliance. This session is open to all.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of this webinar, participants will have more information gained through discussion of best practices and examples of reimagined library spaces. Participants will be able to identify strategies to assist individual library professionals and libraries in implementing the concept of "Library as Place" and rethinking the role and resources of academic libraries.

Instructor: Jamaal Fisher is the Circulation/Reference Librarian at LeMoyne-Owen College (TN). He is a proud graduate of North Carolina Central University's School of Library & Information Science and has served in both academic and public libraries since 2004. Jamaal has many accomplishments including being named as an ALA Reach 21 Scholar, IMLS Diversity Scholar, and past participant in the HBCU Library Alliance's Leadership Institute. His professional interests include mentoring next generation librarians, information literacy, and transforming libraries into cultural learning places.
