Bowie State University President Named 2011 Top CEO - President Mickey L. Burnim to Receive Esteemed Award in May

(Bowie, Md.)-Bowie State University President Mickey L. Burnim was recently named one of the 2011 25 CEOs You Need to Know by The Gazette of Politics and Business.  President Burnim, along with the other 24 2011 award recipients, will be presented with an award and recognized for their outstanding achievements at a luncheon in May.

For the past six years, The Gazette of Politics and Business has selected a diverse group of visionary leaders representing various industries throughout the state of Maryland for the annual top CEO award. Nominees for the award are evaluated based on their ability to be a strategic, inspirational and visionary leader, as well as their success at leading an organization while also giving back to the greater community.

"I am honored to have been selected for this prestigious award by The Gazette of Politics and Business," said President Burnim. "Bowie State University serves as an important higher education access portal for Prince George's County and the state of Maryland.  Hence, we strive for excellence in all that we do.  We view this award as recognition of our success as a regional comprehensive university and pledge to continue our efforts to enhance the quality of life for the people of this region."

The 25 selected CEOs will be honored at a luncheon on May 5, 2011 at The Ballroom in Bethesda and featured in The Gazette of Politics and Business 25 CEOs You Need to Know 2011 publication, which will run May 6, 2011.

"Dr. Burnim is not only running an outstanding university, but also playing a big role in his community. Among the other 24 recipients are Stewart Edelstein, executive director of the Universities at Shady Grove; H.L. Ward, president and CEO of Monument Bank; Alan Meltzer, CEO of the Meltzer Group; and Col. Judith Robertson, commander of Ft. Detrick. Dr. Burnim has served as the ninth president of Bowie State University since September 2006. He earned degrees in economics at the University of North Texas and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. During his tenure as president, Bowie State has experienced enhanced visibility, enrollment growth, the addition of several new degree programs, and increasing graduation rates.  Previously, he served as Chancellor of Elizabeth City State University for 11 years.
