Jesse L. Jackson Sr. to Speak at ASU
The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. will speak at Alabama State University on Friday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. at the J. Garrick Hardy Student Center Theater.
The program, titled "A Conversation with Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr.," is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and available on a first-come basis.
Jackson, a longtime civil rights leader, began his civil rights activism at 18, when he sought to desegregate his hometown library in Greenville, S.C., and became a leader of the sit-in movement. He founded Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) in 1971, followed by the National Rainbow Coalition, merging the two in 1996 to form the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, a social change organization.
A two-time presidential candidate, Jackson broke new ground in U.S. politics. In 1984, his campaign registered more than one million new voters, accumulated 3.5 million votes, and helped the Democratic Party regain control of the Senate in 1986. His 1988 campaign registered more than two million new voters, garnered seven million votes, and helped boost hundreds of state and local elected officials into office.
As a central member of the mainstream media, from 1992 to 2000, Jackson hosted "Both Sides with Jesse Jackson" on CNN and continues to write a weekly column of analysis which is syndicated by the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times. He also hosts a weekly, two-hour radio talk show, "Keep Hope Alive with Jesse Jackson," on more than 50 Clear Channel stations nationwide, and his" Saturday Morning Forum" at PUSH Headquarters is broadcast over The Word Network every Saturday.
He is the author of two books:" Keep Hope Alive," and "Straight From the Heart." In 1996, Jackson co-authored the books "Legal Lynching: Racism, Injustice, and the Death Penalty" and "It's About The Money."
A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000, more than 40 honorary doctorate degrees and numerous national and international awards, Jackson also has served as a diplomat in international crisis situations in countries including South Africa, Kosovo and Iraq.
