POSITION:  Assistant Librarian                                                              DATE:  September 5, 2010

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  The Assistant Librarian works under the supervision of the Head Librarian and develops, maintains, and provides access to and instruction in library resources and information services to faculty, administration, students, staff and community, with a primary responsibility of classifying and physically processing all new acquisitions for circulation.

Essential Job Function, Duties & Responsibilities

  1.  Assumes responsibility for the condition and operation of the library during duty hours in the absence of the Head Librarian.
    
  2.  Oversees and participates in the processing of books, records, periodicals and other items.
    
  3.  Creates and/or oversees the placement of book displays and other displays.
    
  4.  Assists in providing information to the library user based upon the library's files and collection of materials.
    
  5.  Assists with the maintenance of bibliographic and other library files.
    
  6.  Assists with training and supervising library personnel and student assistants.
    
  7.  Assists with scheduling use of audiovisual equipment and materials.
    
  8.  Maintains the collection of audiovisual equipment and materials.
    
  9.  Maintaining and repairing audio-visual equipment.
    
  10. Supervising the use of production equipment by faculty, staff, and students, such as videotape duplication, camera operation, video editing, recording audio and video presentations, etc.

  11. Assists with generating reports for the college.

  12. Catalogs library media materials and equipment.

  13. Maintains the online catalog and supervises the processing of library media materials.

  14. Assists with implementing a circulation system for library media materials and equipment.

  15. Maintains and updates the library inventory including books, audiovisual aids, equipment, furniture, and furnishings.

  16. Assists students and faculty with reference questions and research problems.

  17. Follows through to completion numerous assignments, reports and projects.

  18. Maintains confidentiality of all records.

  19. Assists with selection and acquisition of new library materials.

  20. Manages serials collection.

  21. Collection development in assigned areas.

  22. Drafts policy and develops procedures relevant to technical services activities.

  23. Responsible to the Head Librarian.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1.   Master's Degree in Library Information Science from an ALA-accredited program at an accredited institution of higher education.
    
  2.   Minimum of two year's recent library supervisory experience.
    
  3.   Experience in cataloging using Dewey Decimal Classification and/or Library of Congress Classification.
    
  4.   Experience with integrated library systems and OCLC cataloging.
    
  5.   Familiarity with basic cataloging standards and practices such as AACR2, MARC, Dewey Decimal Classification and/or Library of Congress Classification, Sears Subject Headings and/or Library of Congress Subject Headings.
    
  6.   Strong information technology skills.
    
  7.   Effective oral and written communication skills.
    
  8.   Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
    
  9.   Ability to work flexible hours.
    

Preferred:

  1.   Experience in collection development; ability to balance multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
    
  2.   Knowledge of modern practices and procedures for researching, accessing and maintaining library materials and resources.
    
  3.   Use of office machines and audiovisual equipment.
    
  4.   Working knowledge and use of Microsoft Office; and experience in serials collection management.
    

SALARY: Salary range is $34,414 to $74,449 based on qualifications according to State Salary Schedule D for a nine month contract, plus $10,626 -$23,026 summer contract when available.
