Miles College President George French appointed by Congress to national education committee
FAIRFIELD, Alabama -- Congress has appointed Miles College President George French to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity.
The committee advises the secretary of education on the establishment and enforcement of the standards for academic accreditation and on the eligibility and certification process for institutions of higher education, according to a press release from Miles and Congresswoman Terri Sewell, D-Birmingham, who recommended French for the appointment.
His term on the committee will last through 2014.
French is the first Miles College president to be selected for a congressional appointment, school officials said. French said he spoke with both Sewell and Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, prior to his appointment.
The committee has 18 members, including college and university chancellors, deans and presidents from throughout the country. The committee meets twice a year, and its next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 14-16 in Alexandria, Va.
French called the opportunity to serve on the committee an honor and "a tremendous opportunity for Miles and the Seventh Congressional District.
"I am grateful to Congresswoman Sewell for recommending me," he said. "Our nation recognizes the need for a robust accrediting process of institutions of higher education. Standards set forth by NACIQI for higher education ensure that we as a nation out-educate and out-innovate the rest of the world."
