Behavior Center Leads in National Relief and Research for First Year

The Center for Behavioral Health and Wellness celebrates the conclusion of a dynamic first year.

Since its inception, the center has become an asset to North Carolina A&T State University and the community. Through clinical services, training and technical assistance services the center has served over 1,200 people locally and partnered with community organizations to lead in national relief efforts for the Oklahoma Tornado victims and the Sand Hook School Shooting.

Just one year ago on Aug. 13 the Behavioral Health and Wellness center was unveiled during the ribbon cutting ceremony with featured guest speaker Dr. Maya Angelou.

During its inaugural year the team launched the Guilford County Trauma Summit, the Guilford County Child Trauma Task Force, and the Healing Homes parent support group. The center was awarded the N.C. A&T Interdisciplinary Research Award for Health Care Access White Paper and named one of the top five research focuses at the institution. In addition, the Behavioral Health and Wellness center secured over 1 million dollars in grant funding.

Executive Director Dr. Kelly Graves attributed the impact of the center to the team of interdisciplinary professionals behind it.

"When you have the right people in the right place at the right time, there is bound to be impact," said Graves.

The Behavior Health and Wellness center will continue to expand on its successes for the future.

"In the upcoming year, we are excited about our continued growth and the collective impact that we can make to advance our mission of building university-community partnerships by providing community-focused, evidence-based, and culturally-competent behavioral health services through the integration of best practice research, training and technical assistance," said Graves.
