Business Students to Complete South Africa Consulting Trip

Thirty students from the Howard University School of Business are scheduled to depart this month to South Africa to present semester-long consulting projects.
The consulting trip will focus on social, cultural, legal and economic obstacles to business development in the country. In preparation, students have spent the current semester researching business problems and opportunities. Once in South Africa, students will provide their consulting insights to a diverse set of companies.

"Howard University has persistently shown its dedication to produce graduates with well-balanced global perspectives," said School of Business Dean Barron H. Harvey, Ph.D. "We have been honored to continually grant these real-world experiences to our students and help them develop a deeper global management perspective."

The School of Business has offered a range of similar coursework through international partnerships in China, India, Dubai and Brazil. With the new study abroad program, South Africa joins the list.

The study abroad group will depart Dec. 7 and return Dec. 19. Twenty undergraduate business students and 10 from the MBA program are participating in the project. The undergraduates will be divided into four consulting teams and the MBA students will comprise two other teams. Students who focus on management and organizational behavior will be directed by Gwynette P. Lacy, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Management, Labor Relations and Hospitality. Students who focus on global management consulting will be directed by Kelley Jibrell, MBA, an adjunct professor.
The Howard business students will travel between Johannesburg and Cape Town. They will consult across multiple industries in South Africa, including banking, marketing, logistics, human resources and energy. Companies and Corporate Partners involved include
Nedbank, The Sports Trust, Uniconnex, Elgin Rail, Enablis, Ernst & Young, Petra Energy and IBM. Students will also visit local universities and renowned landmarks while in the country.
