Kentucky State University mentioned in Netflix mini-series “The Queen’s Gambit”
Kentucky State University was recently mentioned in a highly praised Netflix’s mini-series, with a nod to the institution’s history.
“The Queen’s Gambit,” a story about a chess prodigy named Beth Harmon, mentions Kentucky State in one of the last episodes of the mini-series when Jolene (played by Moses Ingram) reunites with Beth. While catching up on each other’s lives, Jolene reveals she’s working at a law firm as a paralegal after attending Kentucky State. Jolene revealed she accepted a physical education scholarship, but switched her major to history after finding out the institution was previously called the State Normal School for Colored Persons.
The fictional story is based mostly in the 1950s and 1960s in Kentucky. The story first appeared as a novel written by Walter Tevis in 1983.
