POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

JOB Title:  Public Services Archivist

The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library supports the teaching and learning missions of four institutions of higher learning that comprise the world's largest consortium of HBCUs-Clark Atlanta University, the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, and Spelman College.  Conveniently located and easily accessible to the campuses, the Woodruff Library is the center of the intellectual and social life at the Atlanta University Center.

The Archives Research Center at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library has a rich collection documenting the African American experience and the African Diaspora.  It features manuscript writings and books, including first edition titles, limited printings autographed and rare publications.  The extensive collection of books, personal papers, organizational and institutional records supports research in education, literature, the arts, religion, politics and society and community empowerment.  Additionally, the AUC Woodruff Library serves as the custodian of the Morehouse College Martin Luther King and Tupac Amaru Shakur Collections.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Atlanta University Center - Robert W. Woodruff Library is committed to displaying excellence in our delivery of service.  Notable accomplishments include, recipient of two Communicator Awards for print communication materials, recipient of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant for HBCU Photographic Preservation Project Round II, and national recognition with the receipt of two awards in the 28th Annual Educational Advertising Awards.
To continue our excellence in program and services, the library seeks a knowledgeable, engaging, dynamic, customer focused Public Services Archivist.  Reporting to the Head of the Archives Research Center (ARC), and working as a member of the ARC team, this position provides administration of the department's public services.  The Public Services Archivist will model the Library's customer service philosophy through recommendation and implementation of policies and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness, promotion of archival and special collections via course instruction, programming, and tours for visiting groups, training and supervision of student assistants, curation of exhibits, assessment, and compilation of statistical
and financial reports. This position requires evening work Monday through Thursday, and weekend work on a rotational basis.  This is an entry level position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Facilitates access and conducts research within archival, manuscript and book collections to assist with in-person and remote inquiries regarding archival, manuscript and book collections
  • Designs, conducts, and assesses archival instructional services, and collaborates with faculty and Information Resource Services librarians for integration of archival and special collections into course curriculum
  • Recommends, updates, implements, and assesses reference policies and procedures
  • Curates physical and digital exhibits highlighting archival and special collections
  • Coordinates outgoing and incoming exhibition loans
  • Coordinates public programming, social media campaigns, and messaging to promote archival and special collections and services
  • Coordinates reproduction services
  • Supervises and trains student workers and coordinates projects
  • Compiles and analyzes daily and monthly reference statistics and generates reports
  • Creates and updates archives research guides
  • Assists with maintenance of ARC's special book collections
  •   Assists with the processing, preserving, and acquisition of archival, historical, and special collections materials
    
  •   Participates on department and library-wide committees and/or taskforces
    
  •   Participates in special projects
    

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or Masters degree in History or Archival Science; academic and practical training in archival management
  • Knowledge of African American history and culture; educational background in related field preferred and highly desirable
  • Knowledge of current archival theory, practice, standards, and proper handling of materials
  • Experience providing research, reference and instructional services
  • Experience with standard office software such as Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Suite
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems such as OCLC WMS and web resources available in an academic and/or public library
  • Familiarity with standard library and archival methods and classification systems highly desirable (e.g. Library of Congress classification system, AACR2, Dublin Core, DACS, MARC, EAD)
  • Knowledge of content management systems, Omeka, and ArchivesSpace, as well as XTF, highly desirable
  • Excellent inter-personal, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to implement and adapt to change and balance multiple tasks and work priorities in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to take initiative and be accountable for results
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to perform physical activities associated with the archival environment
  • Commitment to working in a culturally diverse environment
  • Knowledge with curation of special collections exhibits desired
