Walter E. Massey '58 Named President of the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago

By ADD SEYMOUR JR.

Walter Massey (June 24, 2010) - Morehouse President Emeritus Walter E. Massey, class of 1958, has been named president of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

Massey, who served as Morehouse's ninth president from 1995 to 2007, will take his post on September 13.

Among his many accomplishments as Morehouse president, the noted physicist and former senior vice president and provost of the University of California system led the College in its most ambitious campaign, The Campaign for a New Century, which raised a record-breaking $118 million. Massey also was instrumental in helping the College acquire the coveted 10,000-piece collection of personal papers of Martin Luther King Jr. '48.

Massey currently serves as a director of McDonald's Corporation and previously served on other corporate and foundation boards, including the Mellon Foundation, Motorola, Inc., Delta Air Lines and the Tribune Company. He retired as chairman of the board of Bank of America earlier this year.

"Dr. Massey's extensive background as a leader in higher education, the business world and the foundation community will be a strong asset for SAIC," said Cary McMillan chairman of the SAIC Board of Governors.

SAIC is one of the world's pre-eminent art schools for educating artists, designers and scholars. Approximately 3,100 students attend the school.
