Media Messaging Fellowship Announces Call For Graduate Research Fellowship Applicants
Howard University graduate students from all schools and colleges are encouraged to apply for the 2013-14 Media Messaging Research Fellowships sponsored by Tom Burrell, American Advertising Federation Hall of Fame member and Howard University School of Communications Board of Visitors member, and a host of other donors.
The fellowship offers a scholarship of $10,000 or more and $5,000-$10,000 to conduct a research study investigating the relationship between media messages and knowledge, attitudes and behavior among African Americans in particular. While all research topics related to Tom Burrell's Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority will be accepted for consideration, the selection committee is particularly interested in topics from a wide-range of academic disciplines.
"This fellowship allows graduate students to engage in interdisciplinary research on issues critical to understanding the relationship between the media and African Americans. Our hope is that graduate students from across campus will work closely with their faculty mentors to develop strong proposals," said Wayne Frederick, Howard University provost and chief academic affairs officer.
Fellows are required to participate in an online Media Messaging Fellowship Project study course under the guidance of Tom Burrell beginning Summer 2013. In addition they will initially present their research proposals at a fall Messaging Symposium. The final student-developed research will be presented at the Annual Howard University Student Research Conference and at various professional conferences. Fellows will be matched with an industry mentor and receive travel funds to present research.
Graduate students must be enrolled full-time, be a U.S. citizen, complete an application that addresses the Media Messaging Research Project purpose, and submit a 5-10 page research proposal. Finalists will be interviewed in March.
Applications are due Feb. 28, 2013 and are available at communications.howard.eduhttp://communications.howard.edu/. A fellowship open-house for graduate students and faculty to learn more about the fellowship will be held on Feb. 12, 2013.
The 2012-13 Media Messaging Fellowships were awarded to Letese Clark, senior, journalism major (faculty advisor: Shala Graham), and Crystall Gabriel, junior, journalism major (faculty advisor: Rochelle Ford), who are creating the Media Messaging website for the fellowship; Sheneese Thompson, senior, Afro-American studies major (faculty advisor: Greg Carr), who is studying Black aesthetics and middle school youth and to Catrice Canty-Pope, MFA-Film graduate student (faculty advisor: Craig Herndon), who is creating an interactive website showcasing positive African-American men.
