Thank you for this information on the Getty Images grant, however, are
there opportunities for the HBCU Library Alliance and its digital library
to be at the forefront of such an initiative? Our early work to build a
digital HBCU library involved learning to digitize our own
collections/images and to host them as an Alliance, thereby having complete
control over the assets, how they would be used and the royalties or cost
recovery for our own library or institution.
Of course, this grant may be a good opportunity, especially since Getty has
a tremendous reach to showcase our institutions and preserve our story,
however, I do hope that our institutions will make sure that they
understand the long term advantages or the legal and fiscal ownership
concerns in advance. For example, how do we share our collections with
each other if we have to access them or be cleared from an external
for-profit organization? Also, we really have to make sure that we clearly
own the rights to the images through the proper documentation in our
archives. I would like to know more about what next steps, if any, are
being planned for the Alliance's digital library and how we can assist our
members in digitizing their holdings when it is to our advantage. Perhaps
Getty would help us sustain our own digital library and empower us. Also,
each institution has its own story that is unique and should be preserved
for its uniqueness, although we are all HBCUs. How are the funds generated
from individual institutions distributed to other HBCUs? Also, I did not
see a member from an HBCU or HBCU library on the panel of judges in the
grant announcement. That member would have been a good addition to the
panel of judges, if we were given a chance for input before the grant was
announced.
Thanks for sharing this announcement with the membership. These comments
and questions are offered only for consideration.
