Eunique Jones Gibson (‘07) Partners with White House Initiative on Black History Month Campaign

A Bowie State University alumna who developed the Because of Them We Can campaignhttp://www.becauseofthemwecan.com/ has partnered with the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans to empower and educate young people during Black History Month.

Throughout February 2015, the White House initiative will use their social media channels to feature images of children dressed as African American trailblazers and historical figures, photographed by Eunique Jones Gibson (’07). The campaign is designed to share fun facts or teachable moments to encourage learning about the hero of the day, as well as teaching that information to loved ones, especially children and youth.

Gibson has previously been honored as a White House Champion of Change in 2014 for her work with the Because of Them We Can campaign, which includes images of children depicted as noted scientists, community activists, Nobel laureates and cultural icons. Just last month, she was recognized with a 40 Under 40 Award from the Prince George's County Social Innovation Fundhttp://innovateprincegeorges.org/Eunique-Jones-Gibson/.

Gibson first started the Because of Them We Can campaign in 2013 during Black History Month. After it went viral, she decided to quit her job to continue the campaign year-round. Since then, she has appeared on major news networks and partnered with CBS News, BET and ASPIRE to spread her campaign to larger audiences.
