Virginia State University December 9, 2014 VSU Student Receives Benjamin A. Gillman Scholarship for Study Abroad Kayla Clayton, a junior psychology major at Virginia State University, been awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to study or intern abroad during spring semester 2015. Kayla of Long Branch, NJ received a $5,000 scholarship to help fund her study abroad semester at the University of Botswana in Gaborone, Botswana. She is one of over 800 undergraduate students from 356 colleges and universities across the U.S. to be awarded a Gilman Scholarship. Kayla's career goal upon graduation from VSU is to open a counseling center for non-compliant Type I diabetic children. In addition to taking classes in psychology and counseling while at the University of Botswana, Kayla plans to learn more about the Diabetes Association of Botswana and other organizations involved in the annual World Diabetes Day held in Botswana each year. Currently, Botswana is one of the top five African countries where diabetes is prevalent. Gilman Scholars have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies. The Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in Houston, TX. The program brings diversity to study abroad participants and the countries and regions in which they study. Benjamin A. Gilman retired in 2002 after serving 30 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, during which time he chaired the House Foreign Relations Committee.
