Greetings Colleagues,

I trust you're well.  Today I'm celebrating Social Reformer Frederick Douglass' Washington DC home.  In 1922, due to efforts led by Nannie Burroughs, Hallie Q. Brown, and other members of the National Association of Colored Women's Club, Douglass' home was dedicated as a National Historic Site.

Inspiring Librarians: Turning Engaging Interviews into a Call to Action
Instructor: Jordan Moore, Reference Librarian, Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library (GA)

In this one-hour webinar, Exchange Librarian Jordan will share highlights of her visit to Lincoln University (MO). Jordan's exchange project involved library recruiting and diversity initiatives.  While at Lincoln, she interviewed several library staff and students and gained their input regarding the state of diversity in librarianship.  Interviewees shared their stories, speaking about their arrival into librarianship, how mentors influenced their career paths, and how they imagine a more inclusive field may be achieved.

Jordan is a Reference Librarian at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library, which serves Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and the Interdenominational Theological Center. Her subject specialties are art, fashion, drama, dance, and the foreign languages. Jordan has a great interest in video production, and in teaching undergraduates the important and rewarding work of librarians. She works toward promoting diversity in the library profession.

Attendees of this webinar can expect to learn:

  • The value of mentoring to minority librarians

Just who do your Patrons think you are: Developing your Library's Brand
Instructor: Mary Jo Fayoyin, Dean of Library Services, Savannah State University (GA), Past Chair, HBCU Library Alliance
This one-hour session will focus on one aspect of marketing: Branding.  Your brand is your library's story told in shorthand.  A brand can articulate what makes your library special, what "need" the library fills in the lives of your patrons, and the experiences that your library's patrons have had with library staff, the building, and the resources.  Your brand tells your patron what they can expect to find when they visit your library in person or virtually.  This session will assist libraries in developing their own, unique brand.

HBCU Library Alliance Past Board Chair Mary Jo Fayoyin is presenting this session. Mary Jo has recently been promoted to Dean of Library Services and has served as director of Savannah State University's library since 2001. Her responsibilities include the archives, the audio-visual center and e-learning.  Her library has worked to develop their own, unique brand.

By the end of this session, attendees will:

  • Understand the basics of branding

  • Be able to develop (or refine) and evaluate their library's brand

Suggested attendance:

  • Library staff members who wish to learn how to effectively develop and communicate a brand for their library

NOTES: This session is designed for individual participation; each individual must register.
