North Carolina Central Universityhttp://www.nccu.edu/index.cfm (NCCU) has been named to the Corporation for National and Community Service President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Rollhttps://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nationalservice.gov%2Fspecial-initiatives%2Fhonor-roll&data=01%7C01%7Cowooden%40nccu.edu%7C7b659cb550dd4a00c49b08d3e62382ba%7Ce86ab7691eab4e00b79e28ba7a8dbdf6%7C1&sdata=GDACLW0XqF9Os6AZbn%2BOnC6R73mmBhG94LpHN8%2F3we0%3D&reserved=0 award for 2015.

The award, established in 2006, highlights institutions of higher education for their support of volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. Honor Roll designees are recognized for exemplary, innovative and effective community service programs.

Twenty-six North Carolina institutions were named to the 2015 honor roll. NCCU, Johnson C. Smith University and Fayetteville State University were the state's only Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to receive the award.

"It is a great honor for North Carolina Central University to be selected for the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, as community engagement and service efforts are one of the top priorities at NCCU," said Ontario Wooden, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for Innovative, Engaged and Global Education in the Division of Academic Affairs. "Being named to the Honor Roll recognizes our commitment to graduate community-engaged students."

The Corporation for National and Community Service oversees the Honor Roll in collaboration with the Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education. Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, the percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

"The President's Community Service Higher Education Honor Roll recognition illuminates the commitment to service by students, faculty and staff that is part of NCCU's heritage," said Calleen Herbert, interim director of NCCU's Academic Community Service Learning Programhttp://www.nccu.edu/communityengagement/. "Community engagement and service helps students become engaged scholars and global citizens in diverse communities."

NCCU was the first UNC system school to require students to complete 120 hours of community service as a graduation requirement. In 2008, the Carnegie Foundation designated NCCU a "curricular engagement and outreach and partnerships campus." In 2015, the foundation awarded NCCU the "community engagementhttp://www.nccu.edu/news/index.cfm?ID=32B41BB4-15C5-F8D8-3AB2210C1C38E5CB" classification. That year, students provided 237,495 hours of service in the region, valued at $5.1 million to the local economy.
