New OCLC Research Report Preview: "Taking Our Pulse: The OCLC Research Survey of Special Collections and Archives"

Colleagues:  Unfortunately....the HBCU Library Alliance was not one of the "groups" whose responses were tracked. (See the last chapters of the report)  I don't know how this was handled, however, it is another example of our need to maintain organizational visibility.  Perhaps it would have been an even richer report if the Alliance participation and profile had been included.

I plan to review the report this weekend and then offer a positive yet constructive response on our behalf, if the Chair deems it appropriate.

Representation on our professional library organizations is important for the Alliance.  Hopefully someone will also consider running for the OCLC Global Council at the next opportunity.

Have a great day!

Greetings colleagues:

I would like to echo the words shared by several members regarding the Annual Membership Meeting and Preconference.  The meeting in Montgomery was one of the best conferences I've attended.  The fellowship amongst directors, the knowledge transfer, specifically relating to our communities, and the wisdom of the group, truly made me feel welcomed.  Though Liz Wilson is no longer with Page Library, she is still very active with our Alma Mater (Lincoln U.).  If you would like her personal email, please send me a private note.  Liz is a mentor and friend and I want to publically thank her for her dedicated leadership.

Now, on to my Top Ten Things I learned. I was writing this on Sunday while flying home and though it's not a scholarly, well-written, or a detailed account, I wanted to offer a little humor and share my list of top ten things:

  1. The HBCU Alliance has the best group of Directors in the World and our Founding members are truly trailblazers, leaders, mentors, and role models.

  2. Data, Data, Data - You can't sing it, tell it, share it, shout it, or boast about it, without Data. Then once you have data, don't overkill it for the light readers and don't undersell it for the heavy readers. Data, in its diverse forms, can make or break you. So, pay attention to the numbers. Remember the 3 W's of spreading the word - Who, Why, and Where. And by all means librarians, get the password to the IPEDS ASL reporting.

  3. I will survive (with some resuscitating). We must define how we fit into the Big picture. In order to do that you must remember what grandma said, You attract more flies with Money, I mean honey, than vinegar. Sometimes we have to be creative to attract faculty to partner with us. Once they've joined the program, they will Go Tell It on the Mountain; spreading the good news about how great we are (though we already knew it).

  4. Learn to Serve and Serve to Learn - tying learning outcomes to institutional excellence (especially during accreditation). And remember, don't compare apples to oranges. Compare your Apple to my Apple, and remember, the oranges are there.

  5. We Are Family! We own our digital collection and we should be proud of what we've accomplished. It is important that we pull back the covers too....uncover your hidden collections.

  6. Be prepared for your quiz! The librarians were walking literature reviews - ACRL this, IMLS that, NEH this, ARL that, Mellon this, CLIR that, whew! Understand how the current literature, reports, and White papers are discussing the Value and Future of Libraries.

  7. We, HBCUs, have a mission that is very real today. We all cried a tear when we heard the Valedictorian's speech from the Booker T. Washington Senior Academy in Atlanta.

  8. Our leadership Program is working...We are training the next Generation of HBCU Library Directors. Thanks to the trailblazers, the board, and Solinet.

  9. Practice what you preach: We have an outstanding Board of Directors and Staff who give unselfishly to our organization. They need us to respond to emails, surveys, and other requests to ensure that we accomplish our goals, mission, etc. Hint, hint, more is coming your way soon!

  10. The Womble, Electric Slide, Cha-Cha Slide, and the Cupid Shuffle.  Great to do during a reception, bad the morning after.

In all seriousness, the meeting was excellent and I am bubbling with motivation and enthusiasm.  I wanted to just have a funny email on a Friday and I hope that I did not offend anyone with my stale humor.

Jerome,

Thanks for this wonderfully funny recap of the membership meeting.  There were indeed moments of laughter and tears of joy.

I don't have a Top Ten list but I do have mental snapshots.  I was so moved when the sister from Alabama State walked in singing "I ain't gon let nobody turn me 'round"  that I couldn't put my hands together or give her the standing ovation she deserved.  I was thinking how that song not only connected us to our past but served as a rallying cry for all the librarians in the room who had to go through so much just to come to the meeting....who have to go through so much just to create an atmosphere of teaching and learning in their home libraries...who have to constantly battle for funding, facilities, staff and respect.  We don't let nobody turn us 'round.

The Roll Call always makes me misty because it reminds us how long we've existed and how we serve as stewards of our vast/rich history.

Peace,

Jerome: I am indeed reading this on a Sunday afternoon, I must admit I
did miss the humor maybe it was more under the covers than my eyes could
see and my brain could catch.  You did a fine job summarizing the events
of the hour.  You will make a great director because you are a fast
learner and know how to do things in a politically correct manner.  Or
is that a bad word to say right now, "politically correct?"

If each person captured as much as you did it was indeed a successful
experience.

To everyone that I promised information I will locate those files this
week and forward the requested information to you.

Thanks Jerome!  While humorous, this is filled with truth.  After leaving the conference, I too am so very proud of our HBCU librarians!  They are well versed, well educated and they know what they are talking about and then doing something about it!  Be blessed!

Subject: Reflections on the Membership Meeting - It's a little humorous (delete if not interested)
