Morgan State University News June 14, 2011 Morgan Welcomes NASA Researchers Researchers from NASA' Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research Studies and Investigations (GESTAR) unit visited Morgan last week for an introductory tour and campus reception. The scientists' visit was the prelude to research of strategic Earth and space science objectives within MSU's $28.5-million share of a $95.8-million, five-year grant from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. "You are joining us at a propitious time in the university's history," said Morgan President David Wilson. "This collaboration is one that will enable us to move in a new direction we have set for the institution." Led by the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), Morgan professors, graduate students and the other members of the GESTAR team will take on some of the most important and high-profile challenges in science today, in areas including atmospheric chemistry, oceanography, polar climate change, and the carbon cycle and its effect on ecosystems, among others. Dr. Xipeng Zeng, an associate research science official with NASA, looks forward to the collaboration. "NASA is a research institution, and working with Morgan, an educational institution, it will be a wonderful partnership between the two organizations." "The welcome we've received from MSU has been very pleasant, and we are looking forward to the relationship between Morgan and NASA," said Dr. Mark Olsen, an atmospheric dynamicist with NASA.
