UDC Students Complete District Leadership Program (DLP)
The District Leadership Program (DLP) is a ten week summer internship program sponsored by the District of Columbia Department of Human Resources. The main goal of this program is to give students the opportunity to gain leadership skills and experience while working at various agencies throughout the District. This summer, two students of the University of the District of Columbia, Aida Gueye and Ebuka Mbanude, were among those selected for the program. During the course of their ten weeks (June 4,, 2012 - August 10, 2012), Ms. Gueye and Mr. Mbanude engaged in rigorous public service training and workshops covering topics such as ethics, business etiquette, and customer service. They were both stationed at different agencies where they worked closely with designated supervisors to complete several projects.
Ebuka Mbanude, a senior Biology student, who received the UDC Initiative on Civic Engagement Community Leadership and Equity (ICECLE) grant for his internship, worked with the District of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). Ebuka worked on four distinct projects while at the agency. His projects included updating the Continuity of Operation Plan (COOP), which is an emergency plan designed to help the agency continue its operation when an emergency occurs. In his second project, which involved closing out grants awarded to the DPR by the National Park Services, Ebuka worked with his supervisor and others to retrieve over $250,000 in grant money for the District. Ebuka's other projects included writing the agency's dress code policy and conducting park and recreation fee research. He is grateful to UDC ICECLE and the DLP for the opportunity given to him which has sharpened his professional skills. Ebuka is currently employed at DPR.
Aida Gueye, a former member of the UDC Women's Basketball Team (2009-2012), and senior Business Management and International Business student, had the privilege of working on a Six Sigma Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) project at the Department of Human Services. While on this project she assisted members of the Certified Public Managers program with various projects. Aida has completed various research projects for the TANF team on jurisdictions' data sharing practices as well some additional research for the TANF Redesign Team, who is responsible for overseeing the current changes of the TANF program. In addition, Aida also worked closely with the Chief Office of Administrative Support at the Department of Human Services, Brenda Perkins, with various administrative duties such as formulating procedures for District employee travel requests. Aida is truly thankful to have been given this opportunity, and has not only evolved as a professional throughout the process, but as an individual as well. Aida is continuing her internship with the Department of Human Resources.
