Gendrom Named Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dr. Dennis Gendron has been appointed as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Tennessee State University. President Portia H. Shields described him as a "calm, experienced, and steady hand" critical to implementing the reforms in academic affairs and to repositioning the university to meet the goals of college completion for students who enroll at the institution.

Gendron headed the Division of Communication and Information Technology (CIT) as vice president, a division that has now been merged with academic affairs, along with the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs, under a reorganization of administrative units announced by President Shields at a University-wide assembly held May 3, 2011.

Gendron who holds a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, came to TSU in 1989 as a faculty member and associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, later serving as associate vice president for academic affairs under Provost Augustus Bankhead. Prior to coming to TSU, he served in various capacities as department chair, director of institutional planning, and grants manager, at St Paul's College, Lawrenceville, VA, Southside Community College, Alberta, VA, and Virginia Union University respectively.

As vice president of CIT, he has led several of the major IT initiatives at the University and within the Tennessee Board of Regents, including cloud computing and business intelligence.  He brings to the position of Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs extensive knowledge about academic affairs and about the operations and management of the University that will be helpful leading and strengthening the academic programs at TSU, including improvements in student learning outcomes, retention and graduation rates, and institutional effectiveness.

Gendron belongs to numerous professional associations, where he has also presented peer-reviewed papers on "The Transformation of Education through State Education Clouds,"  "Business Intelligence" and "VCL Cloud Computing,"  "Business Models to Future-Proof the IT Organization," and "Public-Private Partnership in Strategic Planning."
