The Washington Baltimore Hampton Roads Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation is a consortium of universities that is working to increase opportunities for underrepresented students in STEM fields. Members of the alliance are Howard University, Morgan State University, Bowie State University, Hampton University, Norfolk State University, Virginia State University, and the University of the District of Columbia.
The consortium aims to develop strong relationships with government entities to increase research and internship opportunities for students and faculty. It also seeks to increase research and exchange programs for students and faculty at both domestic and international educational institutions.
Since its establishment almost 20 years ago, the alliance has met with considerable success in increasing the number of students in STEM fields at member institutions. In the 2012-13 academic years, member institutions gave out 1,592 degrees in STEM-related disciplines, well in reach of the group's stated goal of 1,600 STEM degrees by 2015.
