INMAN E. PAGE LIBRARY AWARDED GRANTS FOR CIVIL WAR PROGRAMS
Jefferson City, MO- Inman E. Page Library has been awarded two grants from the American Library Association (ALA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The grants, totaling $3,750, will allow Lincoln University to offer programming that will focus on the U.S. Civil War.
A $750 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities will fund the traveling exhibit, Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War. The exhibit, developed by the National Constitution Center, focuses on the constitutional crises that were the heart of the Civil War. The display examines how President Abraham Lincoln dealt with the secession of the southern states, slavery, wartime civil liberties and other political challenges during this time in history.
The remaining $3,000 in grant funding will be used to support the Let's Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War conversation series. The five-part series explores the different facets of the Civil War experience. To help guide the discussions, the library will also receive copies of March and Crossroads to Freedom: Antietam and America's War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on their 150th Anniversaries. A reception and grand opening event for the exhibit, as well as the schedule for the discussion sessions will be announced at a later date.
Lincoln University's 145 year history is directly tied to the Civil War. While still serving in the war, the soldiers and officers of the 62nd and 65th Colored Infantries began planning for an institution to educate freed African Americans in Missouri. Funded by the Civil War veterans and led by the efforts of Lt. Richard Baxter Foster, Lincoln Institute opened in September 1866.
